Madrid: Sania Mirza and Anastasia Rodionova suffered a shock first-round exit from the Madrid Open after losing to Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Shuai Zhang on Monday.
The sixth-seeded Indian-Australian duo lost 3-6, 2-6 to the German-Chinese pair in the opening round of the 3,755,140 Euros clay-court event.
Sania and Rodionova lost the match in under an hour as they failed to convert five breakpoints and lost their serve six times in the match.
Groenefeld and Zhang were playing their first match together, but Groenefeld is an 11-time titlist in doubles, while Zhang won in Estoril with Chuang Chia-Jung just last week.
Sania was defending 250 points at this WTA event and for that she needed to reach at least the quarter-finals.
Groenefeld and Zhang will next face the unseeded duo of Gisela Dulko and Paola Suarez. The Argentines were 6-2, 7-5 winners over Andreja Klepac and Alicja Rosolska.
