The Central Government should give up the Koodankulam nuclear power project and wind mills should be promoted for power generation in the country, demanded fishermen’s organisations at a press conference here on Wednesday.

The safety of the project is at stake and if any unfortunate event happens it will affect the people in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts in general and the fishermen community in particular, said T Peter, secretary, National Fish Workers Forum.

He added that the proposed oceanarium project in Kochi will affect the fisheries sector in Vypeen and nearby areas.

“The recent announcement by the Chief Minister and the Fisheries Minister to open up the coastal zone to cargo ships is a matter of concern for the fishermen community.

Gillnet fishing will become impossible if the decision is implemented,” he added.

He also demanded that diesel and kerosene should be provided to the fishermen community at subsidised rates.

 P P John, Jackson Pollayil, T V Shiji, P V Wilson and N J Antony were also present.
