New Delhi: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President and former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal has been officially elected as the leader of the legislature party.

Badal, who was elected from Lambi Assembly constituency in Punjab’s Muktsar district on Tuesday, is set to become the next chief minister of Punjab.

The Akali Dal-BJP combine won 67 of the 117 seats in the state while the Congress tally is 44 seats.

The elections have thrown up new equations in the state - Majha and Doaba regions, which were the Congress strongholds, have gone to the Akalis.

On the other hand, the Malwa region, where Akalis used to be strong, has gone with the Congress.

On Tuesday, Badal termed his party's win in Assembly polls as a "victory of democracy" and announced that he would not pursue the politics of vendetta.

"The people of the state have reposed confidence in us and we will live up to their faith," Badal said.

Badal, who was accused in many corruption cases during Amarinder Singh's tenure as chief minister, said the Akali Dal government would not be vindictive in its approach.
