New Delhi: The fight between Haryana and Punjab over the control of gurudwaras has intensified with the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government not willing to listen to the Centre, insisting that the new Haryana SGPC Act is here to stay.
Punjab's Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on the other hand is threatening to resign and lead a protest in Haryana.
Caught in the muddle, the Center may refer the matter to the President for a resolution .
The Haryana government passed a legislation earlier this month to create a separate HSGPC for the state, a decision which has angered the Punjab based SGPC which controls all the gurudwaras in the states of Haryana and Punjab.
Haryana Sikhs say the SAD and the Amritsar based SGPC is annoyed as creation of a separate Haryana SGPC overrules their religious, political and most importantly monetary hold over the Haryana gurudwaras.
Armed Nihang sikhs were sent from across the border to ensure that control of the gurudwara stays with Amritsar based SGPC instead of passing on to the newly formed Haryana Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee.
Talking about the issue, General Secretary, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Amanjot Ramoowalia insisted that the bone of contention is that sikhs do not want a separate committee. "The issue is sikh unity and if we have a separate committee then sikh unity will be destroyed and harmed", he said.
Shiromani Akali Dal lead by Parkash and Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister for Home Affairs Rajnath Singh repeatedly over the last few weeks seeking intervention of the Centre in the matter.
The Centre after initially writing to the Haryana Governor to withdraw his consent to the haryana sgpc act, is now tightlipped.
A meeting of anti-HSGPC Sikh leaders is scheduled to take place in Amritsar on Sunday.
