Rs 2 crore for Onam celebrations

The State Government on Tuesday sanctioned  Rs 2 crore for this year’s Onam celebrations, of which a major chunk will be spent in Thiruvananthapuram, the venue of the state-level celebrations.

 This year’s celebrations will be held from August 28 to September 3, the Government said. The state-level inauguration will be held at the Nishagandhi Auditorium on August 28.

 Thiruvananthapuram will get ` 1.20 crore for organising the celebrations, while the District Tourism Promotion Council has been allocated ` 4.5 lakh for the celebrations at Kovalam, Shangumugham, Varkala, Aruvikkara, Neyyar Dam, Chirayinkeezhu and the Karakulam Kalagramam.

 Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasargod will get Rs 15.5 lakhs and Ernakulam and Kozhikode, Rs 40 lakh.

 Various committees, including a general committee with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy as patron, have been formed to ensure the smooth organisation of the celebrations. The other committees include tourism, food, programmes, infrastructure, illumination, media and publicity and trade fair and exhibition committee.

 City Police Commissioner T J Jose heads the security committee and Sports Council president Padmini Thomas the sports committee. The celebrations will close with a colourful Onam pageantry in the capital on September 3.
