Until a few years ago, the life of Mary, born without a limb, had been literally mired in darkness. But her sheer determination helped her overcome the physical disability.
Now she is married and is a happy homemaker. She also makes a living out of her passion, painting. All these would not have been possible had she not received proper guidance from the NGO ‘Roshni Society’.
To give a fresh lease of life to more such physically-challenged people, the Punjab-based Roshni Society under the guidance of its director Fr Thomas K J has decided to function at Kochi.
“It is not that we are coming up with full-fledged activities. We are planning to go ahead in a simple way,” he said.
The Roshni Society is a registered non-profit society based in Jalandhar aimed at rehabilitating children with disabilities by developing their talents - intellectual and artistic.
Fr Thomas said that Mary T A, who has carved out a successful living with the help of Roshni Society, is appointed the coordinator.
“Since I work outside Kerala, I need somebody to help me out here. We chose Mary as she is more exposed to our activities,” he said.
Mary said the response which they got after reports came over in the paper was
overwhelming. “That is why
the Roshni Society has decided
to take up such an initiative
here,” she said.
Fr Thomas said that they
are aiming at a rehabilitation
programme which could
help them in every possible
way. “The Society aims at
identifying differently-abled
people and correcting their
deformities in all possible
ways and also helping them
identify a vocation for their
living,” he said.
