Condemnations continue to pour in from various quarters over the attack on Albin Mathew, a photo journalist of The New Indian Express, by a faculty member of the IIT Madras on August 21, when he went there to take pictures of the area after first year M Tech student S Merugu Manasa committed suicide.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko, in a statement here, said mediapersons strived hard to bring the truth to light and any attack on journalists would be tantamount to attack on democracy. The police should take stern action against those involved in the attacks on mediapersons during the past few days and requested the police to provide appropriate security to them.
Chennai Press Club joint secretary Bharathi Thamizhan said the police should arrest those involved in the crime, and demanded an open apology from the IIT management.
Chennai Union of Journalists president V Anbazhagan sent a representation to Tamil Nadu Home Secretary R Rajagopal demanding the arrest of the professor of IIT Madras and others who attacked the photo journalist.
Tamil Nadu Press Photographers Association president D Sampath Kumar and general secretary L R Shankar, in a statement here, said Mathew was assaulted by MP Prakasam Maiya, Professor of Mechanical Department in IIT, and a few securitymen on duty. Besides, Mathew was illegally detained in a room in the administrative block. The photographers’ association strongly condemned the assault on Mathew and demanded an unconditional apology.
Working Journalists Union of Tamil Nadu president A J Sagayaraj condemned the attack. “IIT-M should offer an unconditional apology and ensure that such incidents do not happen,” he said.
Tamil Nadu Union of Journalists president DSR Subash demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the crime. He said IIT management should provide an appropriate explanation to the four suicides committed within its campus in the past eight months.
