The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) on Saturday announced that operations at the Airport’s Terminal 1 will remain suspended till further notice following a roof collapse that has left one dead and six people injured.
Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport is used for domestic flights and all such operations have been moved to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 till further information.

“Flight operations at Delhi Airport are normal and operating from Terminal 2 & 3 only. All flights from Terminal-1 have been shifted to Terminal-3 and Terminal-2,” Delhi Airport said in its latest notification.
For the unversed, T1 has only domestic flight operations by IndiGo and SpiceJet. The airport — which has three terminals T1, T2 and T3 — handles around 1,400 flight movements daily.
Notably, the Airport authorities subsequently moved all IndiGo and SpiceJet flights as well to the other two terminals – 2 and 3 – which are operating as usual.

“All arrival and departure (planned for Terminal 1) are being distributed amongst Terminal 2 & Terminal 3. Flights originally scheduled to operate to/from Terminal 1, Delhi after 0000hrs (midnight) have been shifted to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3,” Indigo stated.
Meanwhile, all Spicejets flights have been allocated Terminal 3 for all arrivals and departures.
Roof of Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Collapses
Amid heavy rainfall in Delhi on Friday, a canopy at the Terminal-1 departure area collapsed around 5 am, injuring six and killing one whose identity is yet to be ascertained.
Besides the roof sheet, the support beams collapsed, damaging the cars parked in the pick-up and drop areas of the terminal.
Several CRPF personnel on duty promptly alerted the local police deployed at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport here and the fire department, officials said.
Govt Takes Concrete Steps After T1 Roof Collapse
On the canopy collapse incident at Delhi Airport T-1, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that a probe has been launched and concrete steps have been taken to avoid such incidents in the future.
- Terminal-1 is completely closed till further notice and all the flight movements have been shifted to T-2 and T-3.
- For those people whose flights have been cancelled, the minister said they will be given either a refund or an alternate flight.
- The government will pass a circular to provide refunds to the people within 7 days and asked airlines not to increase airfares.
- War rooms have been set up at T-2 and T-3 to monitor the situation and help flyers.
- A special team from IIT Delhi’s structural department has been called in to prepare an initial inspection report, and based on that necessary action will be taken, the minister said.
Airport Authorities Announce Compensation For Victims
The Delhi Airport authorities announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the family of the deceased, and Rs 3 lakh each to those injured.
“Delhi Airport is extending all support to the families of the individuals. We have announced a compensation of Rs.20 Lakh to the family of the deceased, and Rs.3 Lakh each to those injured,” Delhi Airport posted on X.
