CHENNAI: To mark the 107th birth anniversary of Rani Lady Meyyammai, the Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust on Tuesday conferred the award, instituted in her name, on social worker Mano Bakthavatsalam.Conferring the award, former State Information Commissioner Sarada Nambi Arooran said that Rani Lady Meyyammai was someone who believed that education was the most important factor in women empowerment and worked tirelessly to educate as many women as possible. Arooran added that this apart, Rani Lady Meyyammai also held the view that a family could only prosper when it is managed by an educated women.Addressing the gathering, Padmavathi Vivekanandan, Professor of Tamil at Meenakshi College, said that the dreams of Rani Lady Meyyammai, such as education for all women and employment opportunities, were being achieved. The award carries a citation and a cash award of `1,00,000. Pro-Chancellor of Annamalai University and patron of the trust M A M Ramaswamy was present on the occasion.
