BHUBANESWAR: Torrential downpour, triggered by a low pressure, lashed many parts of the State, including the capital city, on Monday. Coastal and southern regions experienced sporadic and heavy rainfall.Initially lying close to Orissa and North Andhra Pradesh coast, the weather system induced heavy showers in Ganjam, Puri and Khurda districts. Recording over 40 mm rain in a span of four hours, Bhubaneswar received the highest showers on the day.The weather office said a cyclonic circulation, which had formed on Sunday, turned into low pressure this morning, close to Orissa and Andhra Pradesh coast. Its outer ring spread over Gopalpur, Puri and Kalingapatnam.Later, the low pressure crossed the Orissa coast and moved into to Chhattisgarh, Director, India Meteorological Department, Orissa, S C Sahu said.Under the impact of the system, most places of South Orissa and many places of interior and North Orissa will receive rains during the next two days.  In some places, there will be heavy to very heavy showers.Such was the impact of the showers on Monday that normal life was thrown out of gear when the rains pounded on capital. Vehicular traffic was disrupted due to the waterlogged roads. In low-lying areas, the plight was worse as storm water surged into houses. In coastal Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur, some villages witnessed tidal surge. Among the places  which received heavy showers were Cuttack (37 mm), Puri (20 mm), Gopalpur (26 mm) and Keonjhar (23 mm).The weather office said the low pressure will not intensify into a depression but strong and gusty surface wind will blow from south-westerly direction with its speed reaching between 45 km and 50 km per hour along and off the Orissa coast.
