Chandigarh: Punjab Government on Saturday decided to put a ban on the screening of the controversial movie 'Messenger of God (MSG)' featuring Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, in apprehension of breach of peace.
Harcharan Bains, Advisor to the Punjab Chief Minister said, "There was an advisory by the Central government about the film, to be cautious so that the communal harmony is not disturbed. Based on these advisories and reports the government of Punjab has decided to stop the release of the film in the state."
Tense scenes were witnessed in Bhatinda and Amritsar on Friday over the release of film. The movie sparked protests after Dera supporters celebrated the film's clearance by the apellate tribunal while opposing groups called for a ban on the movie.
Members of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) protested against the controversial film.
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Harpal Singh Pali, Haryana SAD spokesman Sant Singh Kandahari and INLD leader Inderjit Singh were among those who led the protest.
The movie that was expected to hit theatres on Friday, had been referred to Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) for clearance by the Censor Board on January 12.
