PUDUCHERRY: Andreas Miller, serving as Facility Inspector at the Karaikal branch of the Pondicherry Slum Clearance Board (PSCB) was placed under suspension for graft, on the recommendations of the Anti-corruption Branch of the CBI on Wednesday. The CBI, which is investigating the case pertaining to irregularities in a government housing subsidy scheme for constructing concrete houses for BPL people under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Housing scheme in Karaikal, found his involvement in irregularities along with three others. Based on a complaint by Srinivasan, brother of Tamilselvi from, Karaikal, a beneficiary under the scheme, the CBI registered a case on February 28 and arrested three of the Board staff in Karaikal - K Arul Mozhi (Junior Engineer), Pugazhendhi (Area Inspector) and Kalidas (office staff) - who were later remanded to judicial custody. In the complaint, it was stated that the PSLB had sanctioned a subsidy of `50,000 under the scheme in 2006 to Tamilselvi for construction of house. The first two instalments of `20,000 and `15,000 were released, but the remaining `15,000 was not given. The delay in disbursing the amount continued after the beneficiary allegedly refused to give bribe. However, investigations revealed that the amount due to the beneficiary was declared as given in the records of the Board, sources said.An official from the CBI, Raja, had recently arrived in Puducherry and was scrutinising records of PSCB to find out whether there had been similar instances of irregularities. It has sought permission from the government to prosecute the personnel and has sent a report to the Chief Secretary and the Chairman of the PSCB.
