CHENNAI: Arguing that the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system of parliamentary democracy was only reiterating a ‘majoritarian hegemony’, PMK founder S Ramadoss and VCK leader Thirumavalavan on Saturday said that proportional representation in Parliament alone will usher in a true form of participatory democracy in the country. Addressing a conference on electoral reforms organised by the Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India (CERI) here, Ramadoss said that the current system of FPTP has made democracy “an object of mockery.” He said that such a system was especially detrimental for smaller parties like the PMK, which despite getting a substantial percentage of votes in a number of elections, was not able to translate the votes into seats in the Assembly and Parliament. Also, the system was allowing a bargain of votes with money and muscle power.
