New Delhi: Following Army's retaliatory strike in Myanmar that neutralised insurgents who were believed to be behind the Manipur ambush, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked his ministerial colleague Jitendra Singh visit Manipur to take stock of the situation.
Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, Singh, is likely to hold interaction with various sections following the PM's directive. He is also likely to visit neighbouring Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
Singh, also MoS for Development of Northeastern Region, will interact with members of the civil society, political parties and security officials, reports said.
The hot pursuit of Northeast terror groups inside Myanmar was completed in just 30 minutes by 40 commandos of Indian Army's 21 Para Special Forces. The surgical strike was carried out in retaliation to the June 4 ambush in Manipur's Chandel district in which 18 soldiers of 6 Dogra Regiment were martyred.
The response from New Delhi was almost immediate and deadly. The Prime Minister wanted a "swift response" and decided that a strong retaliatory counter offensive was needed to send a clear message: "You hit us, we will hit you badly."
Two days after the Manipur ambush, the NSA on June 6 held a meeting with General Suhag, Research & Analysis Wing and Intelligence Chief chiefs, the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and chief of Army Intelligence. Very few people knew what was being planned. The Home and Defence Ministry along with the Manipur government were briefly informed about the strikes.
The strike is not a one off strike and Doval will be in Myanmar in the next few days to discuss further action against Northeast terror groups.
A total of 18 soldiers were killed, and 15 others injured, during the ambush by insurgents in Chandel district on June 4.
