Plea to widen Paper Mills Road in Perambur
Plea to widen Paper Mills Road in Perambur

A writ plea for a direction to the Chennai Corporation to widen the Paper Mills Road from Perambur Church to Retteri Junction was made in the Madras High Court.

When the public interest writ petition from LT William Moses of TVK Nagar came up before the first bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivagnanam on Monday, the government pleader took notice on behalf of Chennai Collector and Corporation. The bench granted four weeks time to the GP.

Moses contended that the area, mostly comprising residential and commercial complexes, had become very congested. The Paper Mills Road connected the south with the northern and north-western area, where many public sector undertakings were situated.

The government had, in 1986, decided to widen Paper Mills Road under the name of New Jail Road, but the proposal did not materialise owing to vested interests. There were many bottle-necks on the road, which was hardly 40 ft wide.
