The All Sainik Schools Parents Forum has urged the Defence Ministry to upgrade some of the Sainik Schools in the country into professional colleges.
Fifteen to 20 percent of Sainik School cadets gain admission to the National Defence Academy, but the rest explore other options for higher studies. Upgrading one school each in a zone will help them, the forum said in a memorandum to Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju and chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence, Satpal Maharaj.
The forum has also requested the government that a certain number of seats in professional colleges run by the Army, Navy and Air Force be reserved for Sainik School cadets, forum general secretary M K S Nair said.
According to the forum, the cadets should be given grace marks for attending NCC training during their academic tenure as is done by many of the State Governments.
Sainik School cadets undergo NCC training for seven years, the forum leaders said. Vast areas of vacant land under the schools should be used for cultivation, which would help cut down the mess charges of the cadets. Teachers who do not perform well should be transferred, the forum said.
