New Delhi: Amitabh Bachchan may not have given as many hits as Rajesh Khanna, but his rise to superstardom was faster than any other superstar. Rajesh Khanna was the first official superstar of Bollywood but he had a very different fan base than Amitabh Bachchan. Young girls may have covered Khanna’s car with lipstick marks but the one man who made young boys drool over him was Amitabh Bachchan.
He was not suave; in fact his USP was his rustic appeal. Big B turned the existing rules of Bollywood upside down.
Big B represented the real people, who had not seen the lives of rich and powerful. He became the man who challenged the status quo on the common man’s behalf. He was the one who gave voice to their dissent.
These qualities were visible in his songs too. His raw, untrained voice had a very distinct quality attached to it, which appealed every bathroom singer. For the first time, the common movie goer found a singer who was as ‘natural’ as them.
