It cannot be said that the young Congress MLAs who had visited Nelliampathy had committed an act of indiscipline but definitely it was an issue of impropriety, according to UDF convenor P P Thankachan.
‘’The opinion at the UDF meet in the case of P C George was that as a person who is expected to carry all UDF MLAs together, he is duty-bound to exercise restraint,’’ Thankachan said, while briefing the media on the deliberations and decisions of the UDF high-power committee, which met on Monday at the Cliff House here.
he UDF criticised the LDF for adopting double standards on the Nelliampathy issue and going against the order of the former Government on December 1, 2000. ‘’The GO had stated that the estates on leased out land will be protected and retained. It was made specific that the lease period will be renewed as and when its tenure came to an end and if necessary, the agreement will be improvised. The order had made it clear that it is wrong to take over the estates after clubbing it in the EFL category,’’ Thankachan said.
The meet viewed the hue and cry raised over the order issued by the Finance Department to introduce contributory pension and alleged moves on raising the pension age for new recruits from the next fiscal as an attempt to create confusion. ‘’The UDF has asked the government to hold discussions with service organisations on the issue. A final decision, if necessary, will be taken only after this,’’ he said.
