Patrolling increased in Handwara after terrorist movement reports

Srinagar: The Indian Army has launched a massive offensive along the Line of Control in Handwara and Kupwara after reports that six terrorists having been sighted in the area. The Army has intensified patrolling over the past few days.

Helicopter patrolling is on and security personnel are on alert along the border. In fact, a major tragedy was averted on Sunday when the Army detected and destroyed an improvised explosive device planted by terrorists in Handwara.

Troops of 47 Rashtriya Rifles detected the 15-kilogram IED planted by suspected terrorists but the roadside in Handwara, officials said. They said a bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot and the explosive was destroyed through a controlled explosion.

This was the second IED detected by terrorists in the past fortnight. A five-kg IED was detected and destroyed by army at Shalteng on Srinagar-Baramulla road on April 30.

Earlier this month, an infiltration attempt was foiled in the Samba area around Jammu border. Gunfire was reportedly exchanged between infiltrators and security personnel for 30 minutes.

A string of clashes along the 742-km LoC last month marked the worst violations of ceasefire that was put in place by India and Pakistan in late 2003.
