VELLORE: The ruling party, AIADMK has performed well in the urban local bodies in Vellore district. The party grabbed 8 municipalities out of the 11, while DMK clinched the remaining three. Candidates of AIADMK were elected in the municipalities of Ambur, Arcot, Gudiyattam, Jolarpet, Melvisharam, Ranipet, Vaniyambadi and Wallajah, while DMK candidates have been elected in the municipalities of Arakonam, Tirupattur and Pernambut. In 2006, DMK had grabbed all the 8 municipalities leaving only Gudiyattam for AIADMK. In 2011, the number of municipalities have increased to 11.Sangeetha Balasubramani, the AIADMK candidate in Ambur has polled 23,779 to defeat her closest rival, Shanthi Raji who ended up with 17,612 votes. Other five candidates, including two independents, lost their deposits. An independent candidate, Shakila Theerthagiri got 6,226 votes, while DMDK candidate, Chitra Rajesh secured 3,354 votes.
