Islamabad: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that his country could turn into an attractive tourist destination for millions of Indians if Indo-Pak relations normalise.
Musharraf said that Pakistan had great tourist potential, but it had yet to be exploited, and added that his government was committed to promoting the tourism industry.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of "Destination Pakistan 2007", Musharraf said that Pakistan was home to some of the world’s most ancient civilisations and had sacred places of Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism and Islam.
Taxila and Takhtbhai were attractive destinations for Buddhists, Nankana Sahib and Hassan Abdal for Sikhs and Katas and other Hindu holy places for Hindu pilgrims, the Daily Times quoted him as saying on the occasion.
He said that it was unfortunate that only eight percent of the world’s tourists visited South Asia.
The President urged his countrymen to explore the beauty of their country before leaving for foreign tourist destinations. The government had constructed a coastal highway to link Karachi to Balochistan, and work was underway on projects to inter-link Chitral, Gilgit, Skardu and the Kaghan valley, said Musharraf.
