Over 38.5 lakh seek to be voters

CHENNAI: Over 38.5 lakh persons have applied for inclusion in the poll rolls of the State till the last date for filing the claims, November 11, for the current summary revision with January 1, 2012 as the qualifying date.Filing applications through the internet has gained momentum with as many as 19,654 applicants have used this facility. Till November 5, only around 5,000 persons used the online facility.Field verification is likely to be completed by the second week of December to enable the publication of final rolls on January 5 as scheduled, Election department sources said. From October 24 to November 11, as many as 38,54,862 applications have been received for inclusion in the  rolls with Kancheepuram topping the list with 2,52,339 claims. The least number were received from Ariyalur (15,908). A total of 37,605 voters have applied for deletion of their names, 1,82,635 have sought correction of entries in voter IDs while 1,09,070 have sought transposition of their names. From NRIs, 43 applications were received.
