In a bid to stem corruption, particularly involving officials who fail to act against illegal constructions, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is planning to seek services of inquiry officials from other departments.
This comes in the wake of inhouse inquiry officials of the CMDA dropping charges on officers against whom Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has recommended disciplinary proceedings.
Some of the cases, which resulted in DVAC probe include unauthorised constructions in Manapakam, T Nagar, Anna Nagar and Choolaimedu besides the case pertaining to Hotel Shan.
Sources said in all the ca-ses, DVAC conducted detailed enquiries and submi-tted reports to the government, which issued orders advising disciplinary proceedings against officials.
Interestingly, none of the officials were punished. Sources say the lack of action is mainly due to procedural lapses cited by the inquiry officials, which include lack of manpower and vehicles. The officials also cite huge work load and other petty reasons. Henceforth these reasons won’t be acceptable, the CMDA sources said.
CMDA in its authority meeting on September 3, decided to re-examine a case in which charges against senior planner R K Ganeshan and assistant planner S Jayaraman were dropped by the inquiry officer, who said they are not proved beyond doubt.
Sources said this is just the tip of the iceberg.
“It would be wise enough if the department re-examines all such cases. This will help in curbing the illegal constructions across the city,” they added.
