Nabrangpur (Orissa): Biju Janata Dal (BJD) MLA Jagabandhu Majhi was on Saturday shot dead at a public meeting in Nabrangpur district of Orissa.
The personal security officer of the MLA, who got injured, also succumbed to his injuries.
Police suspect Maoists hand in the killing of Majhi.
The MLA from Umerkote Assembly constituency was distributing land records to the local villagers when the incident took place.
The incident occurred at around 1 pm when three men came and opened fire at the MLA.
There had been several attacks on the MLA over land disputes between tribals and non tribals in the past, leaving him partially paralysed.
Majhi was a a tribal leader of the region.
Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has ordered a crime branch inquiry into the killing of the MLA.
