KOCHI: A subject that appears like a bitter pill to many can actually be the engaging as well as entertaining. This is the message that the three-day workshop at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, (IMS), Chennai, from April 5 to April 7, aims to drive across.The workshop-cum-review on mathematics popularisation is being jointly organised by Vigyan Prasar, New Delhi, and the IMS, Chennai, in connection with the National Year of Mathematics being observed to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of mathematical genius Ramanujan.The workshop aims to gather all organisations and individuals involved in mathematics popularisation, provide a platform for peer review and place to share experiences, as well as identify gap areas where mathematics popularisation could focus, and initiate network for mathematics popularisation.The themes for the workshop are recreational mathematics, efforts for promoting excellence in mathematics such as Mathematics Olympiads, mathematics in folk culture, mathematics in popular culture, mathematics popularisation- recent trends, maths phobia, addressing misconceptions in mathematics, mathematics in art, culture and music and mathematics and India.For registration, email must be sent to [email protected], along with a proposal for presentation.The presentation should be in the form of an abstract (between 200 to 500 words) and include the details of name, affiliation, address for correspondence and email id of the applicant. The last date for submission is March 15.Selected candidates will be intimated by email and the list would be available in the website of Vigyan Prasar by March 25, 2012.The chosen applicants will be eligible for travel reimbursement and accommodation. Maths enthusiasts, who want to participate without submitting proposals, would be entertained subject to availability of resources.
