Hyderabad: The new airport in Hyderabad - to be inaugurated on Friday by Congress president Sonia Gandhi - will be named after Rajiv Gandhi and this has upset Telugu Desam Party leaders who say it is an insult to Telugu pride.
They say the Congress government should have named the domestic terminal after N T Rama Rao, former chief minister and founder of their party.
“The TDP government had conceptualised the new airport and the domestic terminal in the new airport was to be named NT Rama Rao domestic terminal and the international terminal was to be named after Rajiv Gandhi. The Congress is resorting to cheap tricks to claim credit for the airport,” alleges TDP leader Vijay Rama Rao.
The TDP points out that other states like Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have named their airports after local leaders.
The party is also incensed the airport was inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi, who does not hold any Cabinet post...
But it's not just about a clash of personalities in the state. The stage is set for high-voltage drama when Sonia Gandhi arrives tomorrow. Various groups are gearing up to make their issues known to the UPA Chairperson.
While the TDP will stage dharnas and protests, the BJP has called for a bandh on another issue - a call for a separate Telangana state.
Says BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya, “She is coming in land of Telangana, so we thought it would be fit to her to show her the democratic way of protests.”
Naxal groups too have called a statewide bandh on Friday on the Telangana issue. Sparks are expected to fly when Sonia Gandhi visits Warangal, in the heart of Telangana area.
