The Supreme Court will on Friday hear the bail plea of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union President Kanhaiya Kumar who was on Wednesday sent to 14-day judicial custody over charges of sedition. Veteran lawyer and former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee and advocate Raju Ramachandran will appear for him in the case.
Ahead of the hearing, both Sorabjee and Ramachandran claimed that no case of sedition can be made against Kanhaiya.
Denying that the Sedition law cannot be done away with, Sorabjee said, "it may be needed in some cases where there is a clear threat of incitement of violence but this has to determined in a court of law, not by a bunch of lawyers who think there is sedition and then they attack the accused, his supporters and his lawyers."
Ramchandran also dismissed claims by Delhi Police chief BS Bassi that they have proof against the JNUSU president of indulging in seditious acts. "Kanhaiya has not made any seditious comments and in fact he has condemned the anti-national slogans and I can't see if this case for sedition will stand in the court of law," he said.
Claiming threat to life in jail and from lynching mobs in the court complex, Kumar on Thursday made the bail plea before the apex court. Kumar, who has been arrested on sedition charges, said he is a student and not some hardened criminal and no prejudice would be caused to any one, if he is released on bail.
