KOCHI: Though it is two days since the New Year celebrations at Fort Kochi have ended, the authorities have not yet taken the initiative to clean the leftover mess.Though the corporation and other authorities concerned promised to take up the cleansing drive from Monday, nothing has materialised so far. When contacted, Fort Kochi councillor Antony Kuriyathara said the cleaning work had already been started and the entire beach would be cleaned in two days. “We have deployed people to clean the entire beach. It will take no more than two days,” Antony said. When City Express reporters visited the place where the great carnival of Fort Kochi was held, they could see stray dogs nibbling on the leftover food and waste. The entire area was littered with plastic bottles and the waste bins were overflowing. Many of the shop owners told City Express that authorities had not cleaned the area since the Christmas eve. “We had informed the officials about the filthy condition of the beach but they have not responded yet. We plan to clean the area by ourselves as we cannot rely on the authorities anymore, “ Abdul Kadar, a shopowner, at the beach side said. Salimudeen, a cab driver from Kumily, said tourists had been complaining about the waste management in the area.“The dirty beach has created a bad impression among the tourist. Many complained that they even don’t have a proper place to dump the waste. Most of them prefer to stay no more than a day at Fort Kochi now,"Salimudeen said.
