Bringing relief to the locals on the western side of Nettoor, the Maradu municipality launched its first boat service connecting Nettoor Ambalakkadavu and Thevara ferry on Monday.

Excise Minister K Babu inaugurated the boat service.

Babu noted that ferries are known for their antiquity. In the past, Odi vallam was used by the people for the purpose. But in course of time, this service became inadequate to accommodate more passengers. “The boat service was launched keeping this in view,” the Minister said.

He also said the new boat service would be of immense help especially to students and workers. Besides, it would also help the people to reach the southern side easily. The boat (Priyadarshini) worth Rs 10 lakh is funded by the Maradu municipality. The boat, that can accommodate 16 people, will have 64 trips. Besides, it also has space to carry three two-wheelers. The fare for students will be 50ps, while others will be charged Rs 4 and motorcycles will be charged Rs 7.

Speaking on the transportation woes plaguing the Nettoor region, K Babu said that they can be resolved by reviving the long-forgotten transportation projects connecting Nettoor and the urban areas. The projects, including the Kundanoor-Nettoor parallel bridge and Kumbalam-Nettor bridge, will be given prior importance.

“Technical and administrative sanctions will be immediately given to these projects,” he said.

The Minister said that instructions have been given to start construction works at the Nettoor Railway gate.

Maradu municipal chairman T K Devarajan presided over the function.

Vice-chairperson Ajitha Nandakumar and councillors Antony Ashanparabhil, Abdul Majeed, Jinson Peter, Jayadevi Manoharan, P K Raju, Sukumari Indran and Muhammed Kutty were present.
