As a grand treat to the drama aficionados of the city, curtains for ‘Nadakakaalam’ theatre festival were raised on Sunday at the Ernakulam Durbar Hall Ground.
The inaugural play of the six-day long fete was ‘Kallurutti’ by veteran playwright Kavalam Narayana Panicker.
The drama festival is launched as part of Lavanyam, the Onam celebrations of the District Administration and is jointly organised by District Tourism Promotion Council and Act (A Centre for Theatre).
While speaking at a press briefing here, Kavalam said that the play ‘Kallurutti’ depicts the conflict between tradition and modernity and the social reasons behind the conflicts.
“Theatre has immense scope in the present world. Contrary to the popular belief, it is not a dying art, and its scope is ever expanding,” he said.
Ernakulam District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth, actor Revathy and festival director G Ajayan also attended the press meet. “The theatre scene in Kerala doesn’t have the exposure that it gets outside, especially in Europe,” said Revathy.
“Theatre is a beautiful artform. I have been associated with theatre for the last five, six years, and it is a soul satisfying experience that gives me more satisfaction than films,” she added.
Revathy who helmed a documentary, ‘History of Tamil Theatre’ based on the lives of the Tamil playwrights two years back said she hopes that a theatre appreciation culture will gradually flourish in Kerala.
She also said that the festive season of Onam is the right time for hosting a theatre festival.
Meanwhile the District Collector said that government would continue to provide all the support that it has hitherto given for the development of theatre.
And as a part of it, a performance stage worth Rs 1.5 crore will be opened at the Durbar Hall Ground. The inauguration of the open theatre will be on November 1, he added.
