CUTTACK: In a significant breakthrough, police nabbed Babu alias Sagar Kahali, one of the main accused in the 2009 murder of dreaded gangster Malik Suleiman, along with four others from Purighat area here late on Monday. Kahali (27) of Sutahat Uparsahi was reportedly scheming with his accomplices at an isolated location behind the Saheed Bhawan when City Police swooped on the place. Police recovered a .9mm pistol, three rounds of live ammunition, a ‘bhujali’ and a knife from them. Two gold bangles and a gold chain worth over ` 40,000 have also been seized from their possession. The four others have been identified as Ashish Ballav Das alias Dipuna, Sanjeeb Nayak and Muna alias Sanam Nayak of Mathsahi area and Nigam alias Niranjan Basantray of Banki. They had allegedly got together to plot a major crime in the City. According to the police, Kahali had been a key associate of Bijay Nayak and had carried out the killing along with the latter. Suleiman was killed by his co-passengers inside a Bolero, he was travelling in, and Kahali is stated to be the first to pump bullets into the gangster. He was on the run since. He had apparently fled outside the State only to return recently as the investigation into the killing showed signs of slowing down. On his return, he had been organising his own gang along with these criminals. He was mainly into tender fixing and extortion. The gang had been involved in firing on contractor Bapi Praharaj near Salepur a couple of months back. A builder was also shot at by the gang members at Madhupatna in Cuttack, police said. Sanjeeb and Dipuna are notorious dacoits involved in numerous snatching cases across the City and on the outskirts. Sanam has also multiple cases of robbery and extortion registered against him, police said.
