Bhavesh Bhinde, whose company owned a giant billboard that crashed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar, killing 16 people, was arrested from Rajasthan’s Udaipur on Thursday. The illegal hoarding had collapsed on a petrol pump after a massive storm in Mumbai on Monday.
The owner of the giant billboard that collapsed in Mumbai, Bhavesh Bhinde was arrested by the Mumbai police from Rajasthan’s Udaipur, on Thursday. Bhinde’s company had put up the billboard that collapsed on May 13 claiming 16 lives.
The crime branch team of Mumbai police arrested Bhinde, the director of Ego Media Pvt Ltd, the advertising agency responsible for erecting the hoarding in Ghatkopar area of Mumbai.
The billboard owner is a rape accused and has been penalised at least 21 times in the past for putting up illegal hoardings.
Earlier this year, he was booked under Section 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC at Mulund police station but was granted anticipatory bail.
According to the police, a case was registered against 51-year-old Bhinde and others for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and other relevant sections of the IPC at Pant Nagar police station.
More than 10 teams were formed by Mumbai Police’s crime branch to find Bhavesh Bhinde. Some teams were sent to Gujarat and other teams were stationed around airport.
As per the civic body, Bhinde’s agency did not have a permit from the BMC to put up the hoarding. The hoarding measured about 1,338 square metres (14,400 square feet), it said, bigger than an Olympic pool’s 1,250 sq m and nine times more than the maximum permitted size for a hoarding.
The resuce operation at the site of the hoarding collapse in Mumbai has been completed after three days of the horrific incident.
BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on Thursday morning announced that the rescue operation was now over. Earlier this day, rescue personnel retrieved the bodies of a retired general manager of Air Traffic Control (ATC) and his wife. The bodies of the couple were extricated from a car stuck underneath the hoarding.
At least 16 people were killed, and 75 injured after the billboard collapsed in an unexpected dust storm in Mumbai on Monday.
