Mumbai: Adnan Sami moves HC to furnish fresh sureties for bail
Sami had moved HC seeking permission to accept 2 fresh sureties, in the absence of which he cannot travel abroad.

Mumbai: Pakistani singer Adnan Sami moved the Bombay High Court on Monday seeking permission to furnish two fresh sureties in keeping with a condition imposed on him while being granted anticipatory bail in a domestic violence case filed by his estranged wife Sabah Galadari.

Two persons who had stood surety for Sami have withdrawn sureties and hence the singer had moved the court seeking its permission to accept two fresh sureties, in the absence of which he cannot travel abroad. Posting Sami's application for hearing on January 27, Justice Revati Dere asked prosecutor Manisha Tedke to take necessary instructions from the suburban Oshiwara police station in north-west Mumbai where the case was filed.

Sami was granted anticipatory bail in May 2009 on the condition that he would seek the trial court's permission in case he wanted to travel abroad. In June 2011, the high court relaxed this condition, which allowed Sami to travel abroad after furnishing two sureties of Rs 1.5 crore. Rajendra and Mittal Lodhia, who had then organised Sami's shows abroad in 2011, had agreed to stand sureties for Sami.

However, on July 17, 2013, the Lodhias withdrew their undertaking for standing as sureties for Sami. Galadari moved the high court in November 2013, urging that Sami may be directed to deposit his passport with the police station concerned since sureties had been withdrawn.

Galadari's advocate Edith De had argued that despite the sureties being withdrawn, Sami had travelled abroad in the past violating the high court order. Besides, he should be tried for contempt of court for disregarding the court order, she had said.
