HYDERABAD: The department of archaeology and museums Thursday received 20 silver coins weighing 229.5 gm from Dichpalli police station which were deposited at the second additional judicial magistrate court in Nizamabad. The treasure was discovered in a pot while digging foundations for a school building in Nizamabad last December.
According to the department director Prof P Chenna Reddy, the coins belong to Mughal emperor Aurangazeb's era during 16581707 AD. They were minted at Surat and Delhi and also Multan in Pakistan. Reddy also told that one coin was issued in 1687 AD the year in which Aurangazeb seized the Golconda Fort, which bears a lot of historical significance. The coins will be handed over to the Dr YS Rajesekhar Reddy Andhra Pradesh State Museum for safe custody.
