BANGALORE: Dariush Mehrjui, a 72-year-old Iranian filmmaker is in Bangalore for the International Film Festival (BIFFes 2011). Speaking to journalists here on Saturday, he spoke about his films and the fate of Iranian cinema and its censorship. His films were a breakthrough in Iranian cinema since he first introduced the concept of ‘new wave’ into his films. He did a course in film-making and majored in Philosophy after he realised that film institutes don’t teach the aesthetics of cinema, but instead teach its aspects. “I can be called a ‘philosophic filmmaker,” he joked. “I believe that my movies have many layers. A film has to purify your thoughts, your spirit as well as your intellect,” he said. Talking about his first film, ‘Diamond 33’- an action-based movie, which was liked because of its ‘Hollywoodisation’, he said, “I was 26 years old and crazy. It was initially 100 minutes long. My producer told me that the film was going to be released in India and that people here were used to watching long movies. So, we put special effects and action and made it a long movie,” he added.
