With the trend of monthly adoption drives for dogs gaining prominence, the city, for a change, saw its first adoption drive for cats on Sunday. The drive was organised by the Blue Cross on Gandhi Jayanthi. Sathya Radhakrishman, Joint Secretary, Blue Cross India, said, “We want to create an awareness among people on the fact that there are just as many litters of kittens on the street as pups. Anywhere between 150 to 200 kittens that are brought to us every month.” The initiative co-ordinated by several volunteers turned out to be quite a success, with 10 kittens being adopted in the morning, not to forget a lone adult cat, and a few puppies on request. V Pramilla, who works in the airline industry, has had Chittu, her tom cat for over two years now. She arrived at the drive with the intention of finding him a mate. She said, “I was probably the only one who opted for a fully grown cat. But I think it definitely helps if you are a working person or living alone.” Apart from the adoption drive, many of the attendees had their queries answered on pet care, sterilisation and vaccination. Other than that, a number of phone calls were received from those who couldn’t make it to the event. “This one girl from Guindy had recently rescued a cat, and called to ask how to care for her pet. So, the event was certainly a platform for information as well,” explained volunteer Sudhersena Alalasundaram. Perhaps, a more permanent solution for the number of wandering kittens on the street, as the Joint Secretary pointed out, is Animal Birth Control. He said, “Now, when people bring kittens to the shelter, we request them to find the mother as well. This is to ensure that she is spayed and thus effectively curb the problem for one cat family at the least.”
