Operation Swift rolled out to check the efficiency of the City Police in identifying and apprehending decoy vehicles while the vehicles sent in North Zone remained elusive all through Wednesday night, ahead of President and Prime Minister’s visit to the city.
Additional CoP Sanjay Arora (law & order - incharge) told Express that the agenda of the drive was to ensure that all the check points in the City functioned properly. “It is not the number of vehicles, it was not even known to our officers,” he added.
He also observed that such vigil checks were carried even as there were no VIP visits on due and termed the operation as periodical.
Sources said that a white Maruti Swift car was selected for the fake decoy vehicle in East zone and it was rolled out on the road at 6.20 pm. JCP - East SN Seshasai informed the DCPs and other police beats in the city to look for a private vehicle which could be a decoy vehicle carrying lethal weapons.
The vehicle was stopped by a sub-Inspector at Pachaiyappa’s College junction who let it pass when the occupants claimed that they were from ‘media’. Clues on the registration number of the car ending with ‘44’ as the cops got tired of identifying the vehicle.
The vehicle was later apprehended by inspector Thiyagarajan, at Nungambakkam around 8 pm, who grew suspicious over a duffel bag inside the car and snatched it ignoring the claims made by the occupants regarding their profession. Sources said that the car belonged to an acquaintance of Seshasai and the weapons used to make-belief decoy were confiscated from the campus of Presidency College.
Similar decoy vehicles were let into the city to pass through over 100 vehicle check points. JCP - South KP Shanmugarajeshwaran said that two decoy vehicles, one at Kottivakkam and other at Tambaram, were apprehended in his zone. Two more decoy vehicles were apprehended in West zone while no decoy vehicles were apprehended in North zone.
