CHENNAI: Keeping his key ally the Congress on tenterhooks, DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Wednesday said his party would decide if it would vote for the government or against it when the adjournment motion is taken up in Parliament on the issue of FDI in retail trade.Speaking to reporters here, Karunanidhi said his party would cross the bridge when it comes to it. “It (the adjournment motion) has not come yet. Let it come. The party’s stance will then be made known to Parliamentary Party leader (T R Baalu),” he said, answering a question on his party’s decision in case an adjournment motion was brought by the Opposition. The DMK leader pointed out that his party’s stand on FDI in retail had already been made known in Parliament. On Monday, he had cautioned that opening up the retail sector to foreign investment could lead to a tsunami-like situation and badly hit the economy. “It would jeopardise the interests of lakhs of small traders besides affecting poor and middle-class consumers.”On the Mullaiperiyar dam row, he wanted an amicable settlement without affecting the cordial ties between the people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Regretting Kerala’s obstinacy, he urged the Centre to be fair and impartial in resolving the dispute. “If we too raise the hackles on the issue, there won’t be peace in the country.”
