New Delhi: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has taken cognizance of Bhagalpur Police's beating of a Muslim youth accused of snatching a gold chain.
Sources in the NCM said the religious rights watchdog was scheduled to hold an urgent meeting on Wednesday possibly to recommend registration of criminal cases against the policemen who have been filmed joining the mob to kick and punch the accused.
On Monday, a man — identified as Salim — was caught trying to snatch a woman's chain in the Nath Nagar area of Bhagalpur. A mob soon gathered and beat up the man. His hands were tied behind his back as the crowd kicked and punched him in the face.
Salim was later tied to a motorcycle and dragged around. The footage shows a policeman riding the motorcycle to which he was tied.
All this while the policemen present there did nothing to stop the mob.
"This was brutal. We will discuss the possibility of recommending registration of cases against the policemen. We will also seek report from the state government," a senior NCM member was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
Soon after the incident, the state government suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector L B Singh and Constable Ramchandra Rai, and ordered a probe.
The incident has put the Bihar government in a tight spot. It will now have to answer embarrassing questions once the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) team arrives from Delhi to probe the incident.
NHRC has sent notices to the Superintendent of Police, Bhagalpur and DGP, Bihar, for thrashing the chain-snatcher.
