San Francisco: Microsoft Corp said on Tuesday it filed a lawsuit against online customer relationship management (CRM) firm Salesforce.com Inc, claiming it infringed nine Microsoft patents.
Microsoft said Salesforce.com was using its technology in some of the menu, toolbars and graphical interface features of its CRM product, and in the way it obtains software from a remote computer.
Salesforce.com campaigns against the use of software, such as that made by Microsoft, in its publicity. It promotes use of the "cloud" - accessing information and using applications over the Web, with no need for installed software.
Microsoft, which makes a competing product called Dynamics, said it had a long history of investing in technology in that area.
Salesforce.com could not immediately be reached for a comment.
The suit was filed in federal court in Seattle, close to Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington.
