CHENNAI: Metro Water is preparing a master plan on sewage network systems in the city by identifying the gaps in demand and supply, according to Metro Water Managing Director Dr K Gopal. He told Express that the plan is based on population projection and is a vision plan till 2040 and will cover the expanded Chennai Metropolitan Area in a phased manner. “We are working on various parameters and analysing trends besides networking with local bodies on various issues relating to the sewage system,” Gopal said.He said currently eight projects worth Rs 493 crore in five municipalities and three town panchayats to provide sewage networks are on. Also, detailed report for Rs 447 crore project has been prepared for 15 towns.Gopal also said that the prime focus would be on strengthening the infrastructure at sewage treatment plants. “We are looking at introducing the tertiary system, and the 110 mld plant in Koyambedu will have one,” he said.Interestingly, earlier wastewater treatment consists of pre-treatment, primary sedimentation, secondary biological treatment, secondary sedimentation and chlorination before being discharged into the waterways.Tertiary treatment aims at further removal of biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solids etc., as well as colour, nitrates, phosphates and other pollutants not adequately removed by secondary treatment processes, Dr Gopal said.He also said that Metro Water is taking steps to prevent blockade of sewer mains and are phasing out 30-40 per cent of old sewers in a phased manner. He said two 114 MLD sewage treatment plants at Nesapakam and Perungudi are under construction. “I am working to meet the entire demand of the corporation and the gaps will be filled by the two sewage treatment plants,” Dr Gopal added.
