Meerut: Another fire broke out in Meerut city, this time in a mall in Shastri Nagar.

The fire broke out in the basement of PVS mall, Vishal Mega Mart and many people were trapped inside.

However, police and fire tenders reached the spot on time and the fire was brought under control.

This is the second incident of a fire breaking out a public place in Meerut.

At least 60 people lost their lives in April this year after a major fire broke out at a consumer mela being held at the Victoria Park in Meerut.

Meerut was so ill-equipped to handle the fire that the Army and paramilitary units had to be sent in to control the inferno.

The blaze at the fair was triggered by a short circuit and tore through three stalls at the 'Brand India mela' where multinational companies had displayed their products.

Nearly 500 people were trapped in the inferno and the bodies of those who died were charred beyond recognition.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the state of Uttar Pradesh and CBI on a petition seeking CBI inquiry into the Meerut Fair fire tragedy.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice C K Thakker issued notices on a petition filed by one Sanjay Gupta who had lost five of his family members in the incident.

The notice was issued after hearing Gupta's counsel who pleaded that the administration had demonstrated utterly callous attitude and even the dead bodies of the victims were allegedly bulldozed at the instance of the top officials of the district administration including the then District Magistrate.

The petitioner also alleged that even the amount of the compensation announced by chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had not been given to the victims till date.

He said that no case had been registered against any of the top district officials who granted permission to the organisers of the fair in gross violation of the safety norms - there were no fire extinguishers or fire fighting equipment in the fair.
