Marriage between close family members is frowned upon by society. However, this custom of marriage between siblings is practised in a tribe in Chhattisgarh. Notably, the marriage is sanctioned by their society and is not frowned upon.
Mostly cousins get married to one another in this tribe. The most surprising aspect of this custom is if the couple refuses to get married they are subject to punishment.
Among the Dhurva tribe in Chhattisgarh, brothers and sisters are married off when they become adults. If an uncle brings a proposal for his son’s marriage and if the marriage proposal is rejected, a fine is imposed on the other person.
Biological side-effects are seen among the Dhruva tribe owing to this custom. They are prone to genetic diseases. The ill effects are also seen on the children born to such married couples.
After getting educated about these medical conditions, the youth from this tribe are retreating from this age-old custom and rebelling against their parents.
The Dhurva tribe is one of the largest in Chhattisgarh. During their wedding, the couple takes rounds around water, instead of fire which is the usual practice in most marriages.
