Malegaon blasts suspect turns approver
Abrar Ahmed claims he attended meetings in which blasts were planned, wants pardon in return for making confession.

Mumbai: A man who allegedly was among the persons who carried out blasts in Malegaon town on September 8 was on Friday granted permission to turn approver.

A Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court permitted Abrar Ahmed Ghulam Ahmed’s appeal after reading investigation reports on the blasts conspiracy. Ahmed, 32, sought pardon in return for turning approver.

Ahmed’s lawyer claimed his client attended meetings of the blasts’ conspirators and knew that explosives would be planted in Malegaon, Nasik district. The three blasts killed 31 people and injured more than 300.

The court ordered Thane prison authorities to provide Ahmed with a cell and security after his lawyer said that another accused in the case had threatened his client.

The Maharashtra Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad has arrested nine persons, including Ahmed, in connection with the blasts and filed charges against seven on Thursday.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil has announced that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would investigate the Malegaon and Nanded blasts.

A blast in Nanded on April 5 killed two persons, who were allegedly Bajrang Dal activists.
