BANGALORE: Recalling Gandhian ideals on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, Governor H R Bhardwaj said Gandhi and his ideas must be made relevant to the younger generation in the country. Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi on Saturday, he urged the Gandhians in the audience to make efforts to enlighten the ‘modern’ generation about the principles that Gandhi stood for. “The modern generation is equipped with the power of democracy. Gandhian values are relevant even now,” he observed.Commenting on the current political situation in the country, he said that Gandhi has become irrelevant to those indulging in ‘low level politics’. He ‘questioned whether India as a country has made any efforts to adhere Gandhian values. Stating that the country must not allow Mahatma Gandhi’s sacrifice to go in vain, he said that all leaders must go back to the masses and reach out to those who are suffering.Celebrating the completion of 50 years, the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi felicitated freedom fighters from many parts of Karnataka. The Governor expressed his gratitude to them for their service rendered. “Gandhi defeated the mightiest empire by way of argument and reasoning. He unified the entire nation under his leadership. The mantra of non-violence is the only way to keep this country united” , he added.
