Maharashtra on Monday reported 15,077 new COVID-19 cases, the lowest since March 15, taking the caseload to 57,46,892, while 184 more deaths pushed the toll to 95,344, the state health department said. On March 15, the state had reported 15,051 cases as it hurtled towards a devastating second COVID-19 wave. The daily count was also a sharp drop from 18,600 infections registered on Sunday. Recoveries far exceeded new infections.
As many as 33,000 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, pushing the number of recovered cases to 53,95,370, a statement from the health department said. The state now has 2,53,367 active cases, it said. The COVID-19 recovery rate is 93.88 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.66 per cent, the department said. The statement said 1,93,446 more people were tested for coronavirus in Maharashtra, taking the number of samples examined so far to 3,50,55,054.
Mumbai Sees Lowest COVID-19 Cases Since Feb 23
Mumbai on Monday reported 676 COVID-19 cases, the lowest since February 23 this year, taking its tally to 7,06,251, a civic official said. The day also saw 20 deaths, taking the toll to 14,884, he added. On Sunday, the city had reported 1,066 cases and 22 deaths, while on February 23, the addition to the tally was 643, he added.
However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data revealed that the number of tests conducted in the last 24 hours was 17,865, lower than the 25,548 carried out on Sunday, which may be leading to a routine dip in cases on Monday, officials said. Overall, the number of tests in Mumbai stood at 62,71,743, civic data showed. The number of people discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours was 5,570, far above the admissions, taking the recovery count to 6,66,796 and the active caseload to 22,390.
The recovery count was now 94 per cent of the caseload, while the growth rate of cases between May 24 and May 30 was 0.15 per cent, BMC figures disclosed. The case doubling time was now 433 days, an official said, adding that the metropolis currently had 35 containment zones and 158 sealed buildings.
Mumbai had reported 11,163 COVID-19 cases on April 4, the highest ever in a single day, while May 1 saw 90 deaths, the highest number of people succumbing to the infection in a day.
Mumbai Eases Restrictions, Allows Opening of Shops
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday allowed non-essential shops to function between 7 am to 2 pm on alternate days from Monday to Friday for the next 15 days. The shops selling essential items, which are currently allowed to operate between 7 am to 11 am, are now allowed to remain open all days between 7 am to 2 pm.
Under the ‘Break the Chain’ initiative, distribution of non-essential items along with essential ones under e-commerce was permitted. The order stated essential shops will now function on all days of the week between 7 am to 2 pm. Presently they are permitted to remain open between 7 am to 11 am.
Non-essential shops can function between 7 am to 2 pm on alternate days from Monday to Friday. The shops located on the right side of the roads will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while the shops on the left side will be allowed to operate on Tuesday and Thursday. “Next week, the shops on the left side of the road will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, while the shops on the right will be open on Tuesday and Thursday,” the order stated, adding that the same arrangement will continue for the weeks ahead. The BMC also stated that these orders will be applicable until the directives issued by the state government under ‘Break The Chain’ remain in force.
Maharashtra Extends Lockdown-like Curbs Till June 15
The Maharashtra government on Sunday extended the lockdown-like curbs till June 15 and also announced that relaxations will be granted depending upon the COVID-19 positivity rate and availability of oxygen beds. In municipal corporations or regions of districts with less than 10 per cent COVID-19 positivity rate and where the availability of occupied oxygen beds will be less than 40 per cent, all the establishments/shops engaged in essential commodities and services that are presently opened from 7 am to 11 am can now remain open from 7 am to 2 pm, the government had said.
RESTRICTIONS IN DISTRICTS WITH POSITIVITY RATE ABOVE 10%:
- All essential shops that are currently allowed to operate between 7 AM and 11 AM may be allowed to operate between 7 AM and 2 PM.
- In the case of all non-essential shops (stand-alone shops and not inside shopping centers/ malls), decision regarding the allowing of opening of such shops along with the time limit for the functioning of the same may be taken by respective Disaster Management authorities.
- Delivery of Non-essential items along with essential items through e-commerce may be allowed in such districts.
- Post 3 PM, there shall be restrictions on movement except for medical and other emergencies, or for home deliveries allowed under the order dated May 12, 2021.
- All Government offices, except those involved directly for corona work in the said districts can function with 25% attendance.
- Agriculture sector related shops may remain open till 2 PM on weekdays.
RESTRICTIONS IN DISTRICTS WITH POSITIVITY RATE ABOVE 20%:
- The district borders of such districts be sealed and no influx or outflow of persons into or from the district may be allowed. Only in the case of death in the family or on medical grounds or for performing duty relating to any emergency and/or essential services related to COVID 19 management, a person may be allowed to enter or leave the district with no other exceptions.
RESTRICTIONS IN OTHER DISTRICTS:
- In all the other administrative units, that do not fall under the previous two conditions, all the current restrictions imposed under ‘Break the Chain’ orders issued on May 12, 2021 will continue as before.
RESTRICTIONS ON DELIVERY SERVICES IN MAHARASHTRA:
- There are no restrictions for cargo movements and deliveries to shops/establishments beyond the opening time of these are allowed for the purposes of replenishments of stock.
- There shall, however, be no serving of any customers beyond permitted times over the counter.
- Home deliveries are allowed during the period permitted by DMA.
Covid-19 Cases in Maharashtra Districts:
The wider Mumbai division, including the city and its satellite towns, reported 1,952 infections and 44 deaths, pushing the caseload to 15,32,407 and the toll to 27,745, it said.
The Nashik division reported 3,124 cases, including 1,700 in Nashik district. The Pune division registered 3,222 cases, 1,713 of them in Satara district, the statement said. The Kolhapur division reported 3,829 cases of coronavirus, including 1,442 in Kolhapur district.
The Aurangabad division recorded 385 infections of the deadly disease, the Latur division 966, the Akola division 873 and the Nagpur division 726, the statement said. Maharashtra’s COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 57,46,892; new cases 15,077, deaths 95,344; recoveries 53,95,370; active cases 2,53,367; tests so far 3,50,55,054.
