Magic of DDLJ for the 600th week

Mumbai: It’s been 12 years since its release. And Yash Raj Films’ Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) is still creating history.

The love story, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, will complete 600 weeks of showing on April 20, 2007 at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre.

In 2001, the film broke the continuous-exhibition record established by another classic, Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, that ran for five years from 1975-80 at Minerva theatre.

However, DDLJ remains the longest running film in the history of Indian cinema.

“Yash Raj is planning something to mark this occasion. The film has a collection of above 60 per cent from Monday to Wednesday and 100 per cent on weekends,” says Executive Director of Maratha Mandir, Manoj Desai.

DDLJ, backed by a strong script and melodious songs, became a cult film with award-winning performances by Shah Rukh and Kajol.

The film was maverick director Aditya Chopra’s debut. But unfortunately Aditya has not been able to create the magic of DDLJ at the box office again.

The music for the film was composed by Jatin-Lalit and Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics.

The film also starred ace director Karan Johar, who was assisting Aditya, in a guest role.
