Landscapes, portraits and wildlife were the prominent themes at the photo exhibition organised by the Madras Photographic Society (MPS) along with the Jaigopal Garodia Photojournalism Academy to mark World Photography Day.
The exhibition showcased the talents of 15 MPS members, all of whom are shutterbugs as a hobby. Apart from the usual repertoire in any photographers portfolio - sunrise, sunset, beach, flowers - the display included several unique and stand-out pictures, especially from around the city.
However, the best of the lot covered the phases of a complete lunar eclipse, taken by J Sridharan. Pictures of the Taj Mahal and Niagara Falls from very different perspectives than usual were taken by Gaurav Singhal and NP Satsangi respectively. Ashok Kedia’s collection of Ganesh Chaturthi captured a side of the festivities not usually seen.
A Nilgai (antelope) and her young posed for Ajay K Shah’s lens, and Rangarajan captured wildlife in all its dancing glory. Khushboo Agarwal showed a flair for model photography, while DR Deepak Kumar captured myriad emotions in his candid profiles of people from all walks of life.
The exhibition was inaugurated by eminent photographer Jayaraman, who also delivered a lecture on wildlife photography.
A group of around 40 amateur photographers, the MPS was started in 2002 by K Ponnusamy and Ashok Kedia. Ashok says, “We are all brought together by our love for photography. None of us is a professional, but we come together to hone our talents and encourage each other.”
The society conducts such exhibitions and lectures by eminent photographers throughout the year. Membership is open to all photographers, and details can be obtained on their website, www.madrasphoto.org.
