M V Rezzak carrying 25 Indians had sunk: DG Shipping
M V Rezzak had gone missing on February 18.

New Delhi: M V Rezzak, the ship that went missing last month near Turkey with 25 Indians on board, had sunk.

The Directorate General of Shipping says the ship possibly sank because of bad weather in the Black Sea. The DG Shipping has also ruled out the possibility of the vessel being seized by pirates.

He says an interim report from an officer sent to Turkey as well as reports received from the International Maritime Bureau reaffirms the impression that the vessel sank.

“As per reports received from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), in view of the extreme weather conditions and location of the incident, the chances of hijacking or piracy appear unlikely," DG Shipping said in a statement.

M V Rezzak, which was carrying steel billets in its cargo, went missing on February 18 in the Black Sea, near Turkey. The ship, owned by a Turkish firm but registered in Panama, had left Russia for Turkey on February 17.

An Indian official had been flown to Turkey for further investigations and authorities in Ankara initiated search operations for the second time after a request from New Delhi.
