KOCHI: Bereft of hope, Shobin found solace in the Almighty and music. When his sight deserted him, his talent with words brought out his innermost feelings from the pool of misery. The road accident in 2002 that derailed his life, could only dent his vision but not his will to live. Shobin has penned the lyrics for a soon-to-be-released film ‘101 Chodyangal.’ Ten years ago, Shobin, from Kannangattu in Edakochi, met with a road accident that left him with eight stitches on the back of his head. In a few days, as a student pursuing a degree in commerce, he returned to the college. The horror started sinking in when he starting having trouble in reading. Realisation of gradually losing sight came as the final blow to Shobin. His condition deteriorated to an extent that he had to discontinue his studies.A voracious reader and an ardent fan of M T Vasudevan Nair’s writings, Shobin was forced to get detached from the world of written words. The accident had affected his optic nerves and he was diagnosed with ‘heredomacular degeneration’. As he lost 80 per cent of vision, doctors gave up on him. His family left no stone unturned and spent pots of money for his treatment. However, nothing helped Shobin for whom the sight of the world was becoming a mere memory.Shobin began to feel isolated, became angry at self, and confined himself behind the four walls of his room for three years. Music was his only companion through that period. Inspiring biographies of people with the spine of steel like Helen Keller and Stephen Hawking pulled him through the suicidal phase. With moral support from family and friends, Shobin started to write. Slowly, he came out of the self-built cocoon and started writing poems and songs rooted in philosophy and dedicated them to Lord Krishna. In 2005, he resumed studies by joining Government Victoria College in Palakkad. The college nurtured his talent in writing and helped him get back to the life which he thought was long lost.Shobin’s mentor music director M K Arjunan was his neighbour. Shobin’s writing impressed Arjunan who introduced him to the world of music. Today, Shobin who started his career as a devotional song lyricist, has offers to write commercial film songs in his kitty.Shobin is currently pursuing B A in Malayalam at ‘School Of Letters’ in Kottayam and dreams to make it big as a lyricist in Malayalam cinema industry. Also, he says he is slowly regaining his vision.
